What information do you need to request an electrical design?
A practical checklist of what to have at hand to get a quote for an electrical installation design: drawings, space use, loads and scope.
· Reading time: 4 min
An electrical design is easier to quote when the scope is clear from the start. With the right information, the proposal arrives sooner and with fewer assumptions.
1. Project drawings
Ideally, architectural drawings in DWG with plans, sections and heights. If only PDF or printed drawings exist, they also work: the base is redrawn and, if needed, dimensions are checked on site.
2. Use of each space
An office, an industrial kitchen and a warehouse are not designed the same way. The use defines the lighting, the number of receptacles and the special loads.
3. Equipment and special loads
- Air conditioners, motors, pumps or kitchen equipment.
- Computer equipment or loads that need dedicated circuits.
- Expected future loads (extensions, new equipment).
4. Supply details
If the building already has service, it helps to know the type of service entrance, the voltage and the location of the meter and main panelboard. For new projects, they are defined with the design.
5. Expected scope and deliverables
Do you need construction drawings only? Also calculation reports, load schedules or a BIM model? Is there a title block you must use? Defining this avoids rework.
Designs are based on the technical regulation for electrical installations in force in Colombia (RETIE) and the standards that apply to each project; the applicable ones are listed in the calculation report. The design does not replace the inspection or certification of the built installation.
